Then back in 2003 we went again.   Five guys and eight horses.  That many horses really make for a lot of work.  Antlerless elk tags only!
We had great conditions as to the weather and bugling elk.  On the other two trips we had not seen hardly anyone, but on this trip we saw
several hunters.  Mostly just passing through the area.  We had great success and went home one day early.  One elk a day was shot.  I
had a lot of fun on this trip even though the first day I broke my wrist trying to bridle a horse.  I hunted the whole time and did what I could
but was less help than I could have been had I not been hurt!   The doctor I went to when I got home could not believe I had hunted with a
broken wrist.  Well here are some pictures of that trip!  There is also a video of this trip on the video page!
Well now it is time to start planning for next years hunt!  We always try and anticipate the costs first, so as to know what to
expect.  None of us are rich and every dollar counts!  So I am going to list the expenses as we see them at this point!  Of course
things will change, and costs could go up or down.  If we do not draw all the tags we would like then of course there will be less
money involved.  Fuel costs rise and fall very rapidly so I will figure that in.  If you see somewhere that I have missed a step, then
chime in.  That is the reason for this whole thing.  Lets get you all involved.  I will just have to have you email me and then I will
post what I think is needed.   Just click the "contact us" link at the top of the page! This trip will be for two full weeks.  16 days
with the weekends.

Tags: Antlerless Elk......................................$493
Any Deer.............................................$273
Any Antelope......................................$238
Doe/fawn Antelope...............................$41
Doe/Fawn Deer.....................................$41
Bird license..........................................$50    This will only be for Sage Grouse.  Other
grouse come with the elk tag normally.                                                             Total
$1136

So a total of $1136 just for the tags.  Now it will most likely be possible to get more than one deer or antelope doe/fawn tag but
we wont know that till the regs come out.

4 of us will be coming from the Northwest and will be riding together.  So it will be easy to figure the cost of fuel for each riding
in the truck from there.  "Just George" will be coming up from California and will be on his own in that regard.  Figure 3000 miles
traveled, there and back and various trips to the butcher and out into the desert.  3000 divided by 15mpg = 200 gallons of diesel.
200 x $3 = $600 divide that by 4 = $150 each.

Horses have typically cost $400 each for the time we will be there.  That will include feed and tack. 8 x $400 = $3200 Divide that
by 5 = $640 each.

We will figure $150 each for food and camp related items.  This is a rough figure that will get smoother as the menu and needed
items list is hammered out.

So we have   Tags...............$1136     There will hopefully be butcher fees but I have built
Fuel.................$150     in extra dollars here to compensate for that.  If we
Horses.............$640     draw all the tags we put in for then cost will go up
Food................$150     some.  But this gives us a good starting point.

   Total..$2076
Question?  Your trip how many days will you be there does the horse rental include tac?

The rental of the horses does include the tack.  We will have three horses for packing.  We have them brought with paniers.  Often we switch which horses
are for riding based on their attitude.

Timeline........  The season opens on a monday.  The plan is to be to the starting point early in the morning on Saturday.  Have horses delivered before
noon, same day.  Then pack up and head for camp.  It is about 10 miles back in to camp.  Set up what we can of camp that evening.  Next morning,
Sunday, the two young guys will head back to the trucks and bring up another load.  Oldguys will finish setting up camp, gather wood, get water, (stream
about 200 yards from camp) and have plenty of food ready for younghuys to eat.  Monday we start hunting for elk.  The following Saturday it opens for
deer.  We plan to come out of the hills on Wensday, which will be 10 days from the start of hunting.  During the hunt if we get game we will ride down and
take it to the butcher.  This is an all day thing but the youngguys like to do it because it means they can sneak off to a hamburger joint to fill up on other
than camp food.
Once the horses are picked up on Wensday, we will head for the desert and some antelope and sage grouse hunting.  So part of a day on Wensday and
two days, Thursday and Friday will go to the antelope.  Saturday it oprens for Sage Grouse.  We will only spend a few hours hunting them and then it will
be time to head to the butchers, 4 hours away, and pick up our game.  Then head for home and work on Monday.
