Had the distinct pleasure of meeting Tred Barta this last summer. He came to Garibaldi to fish for tuna and see what this fishery is all about. He fished on Captain Bud Hosners boat, "Seelicious. They had some very challenging crossings of the Tillamook bar, and were able to see boaters reacting and responding to two separate maydays.
I arrived Friday in time to see Tred coming in on the Seelicious after a days fishing. We had a dinner party for just a few invited fishermen and it was a great time. Tred signed my infamous mallet and held a baby for pictures. In fact Tred was very nice and understanding as many people had their pictures taken with him. It was obvious that he was tired from the days fishing, but he stayed until the food was near gone and the requests for pictures were over.
The next day we had a procession of boats go out that were filmed. The fish were found and the catching was going good. Then I heard a "May Day" call from a boat that was taking on water. We reported the call to the Coast Guard and took off in that direction. A helicopter was dispatched to our location. Just as the helo was in sight another mayday call was heard with a medical problem. The maydays ended without loss of life. In the end Treds film crew got some great footage and I believe he left with good respect for the group of fishermen he found here.
