Neah Bay is always a fun time.  The state of Washington Decided to
add another day to halibut season and that coincided with Halibut
season in Canada opening for two a day so a trip was planned.  Some
of the regular crew was busy with girl friends and work so I had to
scramble to find some replacements.  After a few calls  a couple of
volunteers were found.   Neither had been in the open ocean before
so this would be their first experience with the mighty Pacific Ocean.
We were met with a beautiful sunrise on the way out to the fishing
grounds.  That is the northwestern most tip of the lower 48 you see
the sun rising over.   You can see in the following pictures how rough
the coastline is in that area.   The lighthouse you see behind the
rocks is on Tatoosh Island that sits just off the tip!    It is a very
beautiful spot is calm weather.  Bring in a storm and it is not a place to
be in a small boat like mine!
We were one of the first boats out to the spot.  But soon there were
boats headed our way from all over the eastern horizon.  This spot
was approx. 34 miles offshore!  There were fish there and they were
hungry.  On my boat I often come up with nicknames for the crew.
Well the two new guys each earned a name.  Its all in good fun but
often the names stick.   It was obvious that Ivan had been fishing
before.  He had great feel for the rods and caught a lot of fish.   On
the second day we began calling him crazy Ivan.
Vlad had not been fishing before or so that was my understanding.
He had a bit of a hard time with the rocking boat and was fighting
seasickness every now and then.  The thing was though that this guy
was tough.  He would get right back into the fight quickly.  He did
however do a little sleeping to gain his strength before coming back
into the battle.  He therefore got the tag "sleepy."
It was a great couple of days spent with friends and the ocean.  The water was great and so was the fishing.  I am sure I will be
spending more time with "Crazy Ivan" and "Sleepy" in the near future.
